Gary Farber, the bestest blogger around who's shown up in my comments, links to a Locus article in which Lucius Cook reviews Futurama in terms of treating science fiction literature as more than just material for pastiche. And he does so without even mentioning "The Sting," an episode which bears a striking resemblance to Philip K. Dick's A Maze Of Death. One does, however, get to read of Matt Groening implying that Heinlein possessed a sense of humor, not a suggestion one hears every day.

Heinlein's humor

It being only Sunday, not every day, would you say Heinlein displayed no sense of humor about religion in Stranger in a Strange World or later works?

Oh, yeah, as usually. I've been rejected by LiveJournal's desire to tell me to fuck off as a someone they libelously claim is "anonymous."

I'm "Gary Farber." I'm just so glad to have to struggle through this insulting software to say so, and so otherwise prepared to make nice to LiveJournal.

Why the hell am I bothering?

People on LiveJournal don't have to struggle through the barriers set up to keep out outsiders. And, then, strangely, sometimes they wonder why they don't get paid more attention by outsiders.

Fences, people. Fences. You like them, you choose them, you live with them.

As a rule, when I make a comment, I don't have to jump over those fences. But if you want to live behind them, c'est la vie (I'd suggest complaining to the management, myself.)

When enetation.co.uk stops requiring me to display my email address on a public webpage, we can talk about the various barriers to participation.
