I own too many DVDs. Now when I say that I own too many DVDs, I do not mean that I have so many that there's no space for family members or oxygen, that I've spent more on DVDs than some small nations spend on defense, like some people. What I do mean is that I have managed to acquire more DVDs than I've made time to watch. I haven't even torn the shrink-wrap off of (an example I'm loathe to name in these surroundings) some of the earlier seasons of Angel. I am trying slowly to rectify this, but it's daunting, and to make sure the ladder in this hole I've dug goes up rather than down I had sworn not to buy any more new box sets until I'd watched them all, or the second season of Hill Street Blues was released, or Barnes & Noble had another buy-two-get-the-third-free sale, whichever came first.

scrollgirl tempted me the other day when she mentioned that Amazon had Veronica Mars for thirty dollars, but I was stalwart, I was stern, I was strong. I maintained my purity in the face of that temptation. But how could I walk the narrow path of chastity when it led down the aisle of my local Target? And there it was: Veronica Mars, season one, twenty-two dollars and ninty-nine cents. I could not resist, and I snatched those DVDs like Strom Thurmond meeting the Gamecocks cheerleaders

I wasn't embarrassed by my slip of sobriety, in fact I was quite proud, and I may have crowed about it a little at checkout.

Target clerk: Eeeee! I love Veronica Mars! How much is it?

Target clerk: I have to get this! Is this the first season? It is the first season. I need the second season sooooo baaaaaddd. I haven't seen it in so long. When's the second season coming out?

dherblay: Hey, they still have to show the final episode first Tuesday night. They'll probably bring out the DVDs on Wednesday, but they have to show the final episode on Tuesday first.
Target clerk: I have to work Tuesdays and I was so mad when they moved from Wednesdays to Tuesdays. I love Veronica!

Of course, I may not pull the shrink-wrap off these just yet -- I've still got last Tuesday's on my hard drive unwatched -- but I've started to think of my DVD collection as a hedge against a future apocalypse in which we have plenty of electricity and leisure time but no access to bit torrent.

You are not alone. I still have Roswell, season one in shrink wrap, and Battlestar Galactica season 1 and part 1 of Season 2 remain pristine. I haven't watched the extended version of Lord of the Rings RoTK, even though I've had it for almost 2 years. Currently I'm about to start season 3 of Farscape. So many DVDs, so little time.
I must seek out Veronica Mars ASAP. Also the last half of Battlestar Galactica season 2.

That makes me feel much better. Of course, there are starving children in Africa who can't get part one of Battlestar Galactica season two because it hasn't been released in region five yet.

'Bit just posted that there will be a limited release of the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD in September! With the original theatrical version!

Ditto situation here. Stargate: Atlantis Season One (have to see what this McShep thing is all about, don't I?) and Grey's Anatomy Season One are sitting all shrinkwrappy and forlorn atop my TV.

It seems to me that we all need to schedule some serious, intensive time in front of our televisions.

I have Season 7 of BtVS still in shrink wrap. But I suppose that's less surprising than other people's unopened purchases.

Well, it's not as though I maintain a website dedicated to the show or anything.

I have tapes, you know.

I had the whole eight years both shows on tape. Buffy, Angel. Oh, and I have X-Files on tape. And Highlander. And all the Star Treks except Enterprise. I was a VCRing fool for years and years.

But some stuff you just gotta have on DVD, y'know?

Not Trek, tho. Too expensive.

I'm trying to decide how much having the .avi alleviates my not having the DVD in some cases.

I'm wondering if I can put all the .avi files on a DVD and watch them on my DVD player.

Probably not.

It depends on the DVD player. Pioneer had one out a few months ago that would allow you to do that. I haven't seen it recently, though.

I noticed an ad the other day that the price of Next Gen DVDs is about to be significantly cut in R2. Maybe R1 shortly?

They cut Deep Space Nine in half at Amazon. But $55.00 is still steep for my budget, and I already have the final four seasons of DSN.

I know the feeling. I'm not as bad as I was, but I still have waiting to be seen:
